This personal fall limiter is an affordable alternative to a shock-absorbing lanyard. The Miller Scorpion series of PFLs (also called self-retracting lifelines or SRLs) provide lightweight fall protection that arrests lifeline roll-out within inches. The Scorpion PFL-7-Z7/9FT is light enough to wear with the housing attached directly to the harness dorsal D-ring, or it can attach overhead for greater versatility and less weight on the worker.

The Miller Scorpion SRL has no previously determined service life. Regular inspection is key; Daily by the worker using the device, and periodically a more thorough look by a competent person. If at any point the unit is observed to be damaged or not working properly, it should be taken out of service and discarded. Preferably by cutting the webbing to insure it is not inadvertently used at a later date.
In the case of being exposed to the elements, more or less the same advice applies. The black polyester webbing will fade in color, and this is not in and of itself a problem. We would be looking for fraying or a crispiness to the fabric. UV exposure is so variable and dependent on so many factors, we really can’t offer any timeline. Depending on the weather in your area, we might expect to see mechanical difficulties in the spring retraction mechanism before the webbing becomes ruined by sunlight UV damage.
The Miller Scorpion PFL series is not really meant to be left out of doors for extended periods of time. As with your harness, proper storage when not in use is just good practice.
